Prior to the construction of the new UBC’s Beaty Biodiversity Research Center the existing buildings had to be deconstructed. To reduce recyclable waste leaving the site, the existing 4 storey concrete structure was crushed in place and used for fill for the new foundation. This $40 million landmark lab facility is home for both the Biodiversity Research Centre and the Beaty Biodiversity Museum which features a massive glass atrium to showcase an 85 foot long skeleton of a blue whale and a 30,000sf living roof to support aquatic plants and insects while reducing storm water runoff. This project was constructed using cast-in place concrete.
