The TRI $112 million project involves construction of a new 13-storey, state-of-the-art healthcare facility as well as refurbishment of the existing hospital. The TRI facility is being constructed in the midst of Toronto’s busy downtown core, which adds to the complexities of the project, yet is viewed as an exciting challenge for our Aecon partners. As one of the world’s most advanced rehabilitation research facilities, TRI will feature extensive state-of-the-art clinical components. Among the 60,000-sq-ft of advanced laboratory space will be labs dedicated to recreating real life environments – ice, snow, uneven terrains, the interior of a single-family dwelling – to provide researchers with a better understanding of how older people and those with serious injuries can cope, adapt and enhance quality of life. Scope of work for TRI will include the 13-storey South Wing and three-level basement for a total of 216,000-sq-ft of new construction, as well as the addition of a spacious therapeutic garden on the North Wing roof.
