The Bioenergy Research Demonstration Facility (BRDF) Recovery Expansion was a phased infrastructure upgrade supporting the University of British Columbia's district energy network and long-term sustainability goals. Scott Construction delivered a new two-storey, 1,431 sq. ft. steel structure addition integrated with the operational BRDF facility to house advanced heat pump infrastructure that recovers waste heat from the existing biomass energy system. The project included structural integration with the existing facility, installation of new mechanical and electrical systems, process piping tie-ins, and modifications to support expanded thermal energy recovery capacity.

Constructed within an active campus energy-generation facility, the project required detailed planning, phased execution, shutdown coordination, and rigorous safety controls to maintain uninterrupted operations. The completed expansion improves overall system efficiency, reduces reliance on conventional energy sources, and supports UBC's transition toward a lower-carbon energy future.
