As members of the SFU community, Marianne Gibson and her late husband Edward Gibson have inspired many through their passion for education and the arts. The new Gibson Art Museum will continue this legacy by serving as a teaching museum on SFU’s Burnaby Campus.

The 1-storey, 12,000 sq. ft. purpose-built art museum was delivered on an active university campus, requiring careful coordination of mass timber roof elements, architectural finishes, and building systems to support gallery environments and public programming. Detailed logistics planning, sequencing, and safety controls were implemented to minimize disruption to ongoing campus operations.

The facility incorporates mass timber as part of the roof structure, enabling long spans, integrated daylighting, and high-quality interior spaces suited to exhibition, teaching, and research use. Completed in 2025, the museum serves as a permanent academic and cultural asset within the UniverCity East Gate development, providing flexible gallery space and public access to more than 5,500 modern and contemporary artworks.
