Scott Construction: A Benefit Company Focused on Sustainability and Impact

At Scott Construction, our purpose has always been clear: to build responsibly and ethically while making a positive impact on our people, communities, and environment. Over the years, our commitment to these values has been demonstrated through various initiatives that have created a lasting impact on our people and planet.

We are proud to share that we are a legally registered Benefits Corporation under BC law. This allows us to deepen our commitment to purpose-driven business practices while streamlining our approach to sustainability and social impact.

What is a Benefit Company?

Benefit Company status is a legal designation under British Columbia law. As a Benefit Company, Scott Construction is legally obligated to:

– Consider the impact of our decisions on all stakeholders, including employees, clients, and communities.
– Maintain high standards of corporate responsibility and transparency.

This legal structure, introduced in British Columbia on June 30, 2020, allows companies to pursue both economic and social mandates, ensuring that their operations benefit not only shareholders but also broader society.

Our Commitment to Public Benefits

In line with our Benefit Company status, we have outlined specific commitments to public benefits:

Cultivating Community: We provide paid volunteer days off and organize group community initiatives, resulting in over 240 hours of employee volunteer service.

Putting People First: Our focus on career development programs, coupled with comprehensive rewards, has led to high engagement (86% to 94% over the last three years) and retention rates.

Taking Care of the Planet: Beyond building to sustainability standards like LEED, WELL, and Passive House, we aim for over 75% waste diversion on our sites. We are also a Climate Smart Certified business, working to minimize our environmental impact.

Values in Action: Our employee-led Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) committee, along with Mental Health and Volunteer committees, influence our policies, internal initiatives, and evolution as a Benefit Company.

Our values remain the same, and our commitment to sustainability and ethical business practices is stronger than ever. We are excited about this next chapter, where we can focus more on delivering real impact through our core business operations.
