The First Peoples’ Gathering House at Simon Fraser University was constructed as a purpose-built cultural hub to support Indigenous students, faculty, staff, and community members. The 15,000 sq. ft. facility is anchored by a ceremonial hall accommodating 300 people and complemented by spaces including an Elders room, wellness room, classroom, dressing room, Indigenous peoples’ lounge, and a food service kitchen.
The building features mass timber and structural steel with exposed wood elements, evoking the warmth and cultural resonance of traditional longhouses while achieving high standards of sustainability and durability. Integrated sensitively into its sloped campus site, the Gathering House creates meaningful indoor and outdoor spaces for ceremony, education, and connection. It now stands as a lasting symbol of reconciliation and cultural exchange.
The project has been registered and delivered to LEED Gold performance standards, underscoring Scott Construction’s dedication to sustainable building.
